An Update from the Policy Committee Chair, Gregg Monti

How many times have you read an article in the newspaper or heard a news report on the radio or TV that made you raise your eyebrows and shake your head or in some cases raise your blood pressure?  The Policy Committee is here to listen to these concerns. It is important for us to hear from the Chamber Membership about specific concerns/issues and how they relate to our business community and greater Peterborough.  These concerns and issues can be presented to the Policy Committee and through due process, if warranted, taken to the Board of Directors, City Hall, Queen’s Park, or the Federal Government.  It all starts with your voice.

This message aims to update you on the group's work and to ask for your help as crucial votes are coming up at City Council and County Council.

Think.
Peterborough Chamber of Commerce announces “Think” Campaign. The Chamber of Commerce has distributed Public Service Announcements to the area media on the subject of cross-border shopping. The recent dramatic change in the value of the Canadian dollar has resulted in an equally dramatic increase in cross-border and online shopping. The Chamber of Commerce campaign addresses three key issues, asking consumer to “think” about: 1. Whether or not there are any true savings. “We feel that when consumers add up all of the costs associated with a shopping trip across the border there is little or no benefit.” says Stu Harrison, General Manager of the Chamber of Commerce. 2. The local retailers. All of them are reacting as quickly as possible. Many are faced with significant losses on merchandise they purchased months ago. All are still expected to pay their employees, taxes, heat and hydro etc. 3. What kind of community you want to have. Small business contributes significant amounts of money to charity, sponsorships of festivals and events, and all of the recreational, artistic, historic infrastructure provided by municipal Government through taxes. Without small business all of this would be seriously diminished. “We are simply asking people to stop and think about it”, says Harrison, “don’t get caught up in all of the excitement without giving it careful consideration”. The following links are of the ads running in local media. If you would like a poster to hang in your business, please contact the Chamber at 748-9771.
